Ein schöner Ausflug an der Grenze zwischen dem Pomatt (Formazza Tal) und dem Bedrettotal und über den Passo San Giacomo, den alten „Berg des Val d’Olgia“, der wegen seiner leichten Erreichbarkeit jahrhundertelang eine wichtige direkte Handelsroute zwischen Mailand, Gotthard und Graubünden war.
Die Strecke beginnt in Riale im oberen Pomatt beim Langlaufzentrum (Hotel Aalts Dorf). Nach der Überquerung der kleinen Brücke über den Tosa beginnt die Auffahrt auf der schönen Schotterstraße des Passo San Giacomo, die -in den 1920er-Jahren für die Bauarbeiten an den Toggia- und Castel-Staudämmen angelegt wurde: Die Straße ist ein wahres Meisterwerk, mit geringer Steigung und Kehren mit perfekter Linienführung. Nach den Kehren und der Steigung erreicht man die Maria-Luisa-Schutzhütte und darauf den Toggia-Stausee. Von hier führt die Straße mit einer sehr geringen Steigung auf halber Hügellage rund um den ganzen See. Nun geht es an der Abzweigung zur Regina-Alm im Produktionsgebiet des Bettelmatt-Käses vorbei zum Passo San Giacomo, wo die Schotterstraße endet. Noch etwa hundert Meter bergauf kommt man am Gipfelkreuz an, von dem man das Val Bedretto und das Gotthardgebiet überblickt.

Belle randonnée sur la frontière entre le Val Formazza et le Val Bedretto à travers le Col San Giacomo, appelé autrefois « Montagna di Valdolgia », qui grâce à son accès facile a représenté pendant des siècles une voie commerciale directe importante entre Milan, le Col du Gothard et les Grisons.
Le parcours commence à Riale, dans le Haut Val Formazza, près du centre d’activités sportives hivernales nommé Centro del Fondo (hôtel Aalts Dorf). Traversez la rivière Toce sur le petit pont et commencez à monter sur la belle route de terre du Col San Giacomo, construite dans les années 1920 au service des travaux de construction des barrages du Toggia et du Castel : la route est un véritable chef-d’oeuvre avec une faible inclinaison et des virages aux lignes parfaites.
Après les virages et un tronçon en montée, vous atteindrez le Refuge Maria Luisa, puis le Barrage du Lac Toggia. À partir de là, la route continue sur une inclinaison très faible en longeant tout le lac à mi-côte. Ignorez le croisement pour l’Alpe Regina, zone de fabrication du fromage Bettelmatt, et continuez tout droit pour arriver au Col San Giacomo où termine la route de terre. Pédalez encore sur une centaine de mètres pour atteindre la croix d’où vous pourrez voir la Vallée Bedretto et la zone du Gothard.

Beautiful hike straddling the border between Val Formazza and Val Bedretto across the San Giacomo Pass, the ancient “Mountain of Valdolgia,” which, because of its easy access, was a crucial direct trade route between Milan, Gotthard, and the Grisons for centuries.
The route begins in Riale, in the upper Formazza Valley, at the Centro del Fondo (Aalts Dorf hotel). We cross the Toce River on the small bridge and begin to climb along the beautiful dirt road of the San Giacomo Pass, built in the 1920s to serve the construction of the Toggia and Castel dams: the road is a true masterpiece, with low gradients and hairpin bends with perfect lines. At the end of the hairpin turns and the uphill section, the Maria Luisa Refuge is reached, then the Toggia Lake Dam. From here, the road continues at a very weak gradient, skirting the entire lake on a midslope. Ignoring the fork for Alpe Regina, where Bettelmatt cheese is produced, we continue until reaching Passo San Giacomo, where the dirt road ends. Another hundred meters or so uphill, and we reach the cross from which we can look out over the Bedretto Valley and the Gotthard area.

Bella escursione a cavallo della frontiera tra Val Formazza e Val Bedretto attraverso il Passo San Giacomo, l’Antica “Montagna di Valdolgia”, che per il suo facile accesso ha rappresentato per secoli un’importante via commerciale diretta tra Milano, il Gottardo e i Grigioni.
Il percorso inizia a Riale, in alta Val Formazza, presso il Centro del Fondo (albergo Aalts Dorf).
Si attraversa il fiume Toce sul ponticello e si inizia a salire lungo la bella strada sterrata del Passo San Giacomo, costruita negli anni ‘20 a servizio dei lavori di costruzione delle dighe del Toggia e del Castel: la strada è un vero capolavoro, con pendenza ridotta e tornanti dalle linee perfette. Al termine dei tornanti e del tratto in salita si raggiunge il Rifugio Maria Luisa, quindi la Diga del Lago Toggia. Da qui la strada prosegue a debolissima pendenza costeggiando a mezzacosta tutto il lago. Ignorando il bivio per l’Alpe Regina, zona di produzione del formaggio Bettelmatt, si prosegue diritti fino ad arrivare al Passo San Giacomo dove termina la strada sterrata. Ancora un centinaio di metri di salita e si raggiunge la croce da cui possiamo volgere lo sguardo sulla Valle Bedretto e la zona del Gottardo.
